Blackcurrants

October 12, 2009

Great article by Steve Wratten in The Press on the weekend. Hope he doesn’t mind me paraphrasing but basically, key comments were:

  • Blackcurrants are simple to grow and look after
  • Order blackcurrants from nursery now and plant them in autumn
  • Pruning – do it in autumn, cutting out about 1/3 of the older, darker shoots – fruit tends to concentrate on new shoots
  • Blackcurrants enjoy log burner ash – sprinkle on in winter and spring
  • Blackberries work best after being boiled in a little water with some sweetener – the heat will not destroy the beneficial contents of the fruit
